Jun 18, 2012 · Fuel injection needs high pressure to work. 172s with carburetors don't have any fuel pumps at all (save the primer). The vacuum pump powers the attitude indicator and heading indicator usually. These will start to precess and operate erratically after pump failure and the vacuum gauge would read zero.
Aircraft Spruce supplies components for a wide variety of homebuilt aircraft and discount pilot supplies.
vacuum power system: Air-driven gyros normally are powered by a vacuum pump attached to and driven by the engine. Suction lines connect the pump to the instruments, drawing cabin air through the filtered openings in the instrument case. As the air enters the case, it is accelerated and directed against small "buckets" cast into the gyro wheel.
A vacuum pump failure alone shouldn't affect the engine. It affects the attitude and heading indicators only. I think you should post this on the C172 REP forum .
